On the hunt for the perfect bridesmaid dress? Check out our top 10 tips for making sure your best girls are dressed to perfection on your big day…
1.Pick your dress first
Just in case you haven’t already, consider this your polite reminder to make sure you pick your dress first! Your bridesmaids dress choice will be influenced by the style of your dress, so you need to make sure you’ve got yours in the bag first.
2.Set a budget
Before you head out shopping you need to decide on a budget. Several points might influence this, for example who is paying for the dress. It’s generally accepted in the UK that the bride and groom pay for bridesmaid dresses, so if that’s the case you need to decide how much budget you’ll allocate. If your bridesmaids are paying then you will need to have a conversation with them about what they can afford.
3.Consider the practical points
Before you start the fun bit, have a think about any practical considerations. For example, the season you’re getting married in will affect the kind of dresses you choose. Making your girls wear a strapless cocktail dress in December might be a bit mean – mottled legs are never a good look! Other practical points to consider will vary depending on your situation, for example one of your bridesmaids might be pregnant or breastfeeding which will influence what kind of dress they can wear.
4.Do some research
Take a look at online boutiques, magazines, blogs, Pinterest and even family and friends’ wedding albums on Facebook. Make a note of what you like and what you’d like to avoid. After some time spent researching you should have a rough idea of what you’re after, or at the very least a few themes in mind. For example, you might discover you love pastel gowns, or perhaps you love the look of mixed hemlines? If you’ve got the time to spare, create a Pinterest board or gather together your favourite images so you can share them with your bridesmaids.
5.Pick a colour
Most bridesmaids tend to stick to the same colour group, so you’ll need to decide which hue to go for. By this point in the planning stage you might already have a clear palette idea in mind, so pick from that. If not, now is the time to decide. Consider your bouquet colour, the décor of the venue or simply pick your favourite colour.
6.Pick a style
Once you’ve got a rough idea of what you’re after it’s time to spend some time thinking about style. Think about what will flatter and complement your dress, as well as what will fit into the whole aesthetic of the big day. A flowing boho maxi dress would look great at a beach wedding, whereas a structured cocktail gown would be perfect for a more formal affair.
7.Mix it up
Picking one style that will suit and flatter all of your bridesmaids may be challenging; it’s unlikely that they’ll all be the same size and shape. If you’re struggling, why not mix up the styles and let your girls choose from a selection? Having a variety of different bridesmaid dresses is an increasingly common option which lends itself well to large bridal parties. To make sure the overall effect is still cohesive, opt for dresses of the same colour or a complimentary tonal mix of shades. You can tie it all together with matching accessories, bouquets and shoes.
If you like the flexibility of different dresses but would prefer a more uniform look, consider opting for a multiway dress. A multiway dress is the same dress, but it can be worn and styled in lots of different ways to suit the individual bridesmaid. This way the bridal party looks like one cohesive group, but each bridesmaid can show off their individuality and wear the dress however they feel most comfortable.
Once you have a clear idea in mind it’s time to go shopping! Ideally head out with all of the bridesmaids so that they can try everything on together and you can get a good idea of how they’ll look as a group. Keep it fun and light-hearted – why not go for a lovely lunch afterwards or finish the day at your favourite wine bar?
10.Have a group fitting
Once you’ve all got your dresses you should arrange to have a final group fitting. This will allow you to get an accurate idea of what you’ll all look like on the day. It will also let you see what finishing touches are required, such as alterations or accessories. Bring a hanky – this could get emotional!
