The wedding dress might get most of the attention in the lead-up, but it’s important your outfit is on point for the big day too. Not only will it help you look the part, but you’ll feel your best too. And that’s a pretty big deal on what many people consider the biggest and happiest day of their lives!
Now picking out some trousers, a shirt and a jacket might seem like a piece of cake, but there are a few details to consider when it comes to creating a stylish, cohesive look. With that in mind, here are our five top tips for stylish grooms-to-be.
- Complement your bride and the venue
Pick a suit which fits in with your wedding. That means paying attention to details such as the colour scheme, style of venue and any theme. If, for example, you’ve opted for a pastel hued wedding complete with pink peonies and soft fairy lighting, a lime green velvet number might stand out for all the wrong reasons! To pick an outfit that complements the rest of the day we suggest you pick a colour, or complementary colour, from your wedding colour scheme and use it as a base. Alternatively, pick a neutral base – such as grey – and accessorise with your wedding colours.
It might also be wise to find out what sort of style the bride is going for, without making her do a big reveal! For instance, if she’s plumped for a beachy bohemian number, a black-tie suit might be a bit over the top for you. Likewise, consider the style of the venue. A tweed number would be great for a rustic barn wedding, less so for a posh manor house.
- Choose an impeccable fit
If you’ve never been fitted for a suit before, now’s the time! Nothing looks worse than an ill-fitting suit, so it pays to be measured by a professional. If you’re hiring ready to wear it can speed up the process, plus it’s useful knowledge to have for the future.
In terms of fit, you want the suit to feel snug but not tight when you are walking, standing, sitting down, doing the macarena with your great aunt Edna etc. What you don’t want is for the suit to at any point feel restrictive, as if a button might spring loose. That will not inspire confidence!
To get the perfect fit, start early and don’t rush. Don’t panic if the first few suits you try on aren’t perfect and instead spend some time experimenting with different sizes and looks until you find the one.
- Consider your groomsmen
When planning your wedding day look, you’ll want to consider your groomsmen too. Will they be wearing the same as you? Or will you adopt a mix and match approach? Again, speak with your bride-to-be and see what the plan is for the bridesmaids. When it’s time to go suit shopping with the boys, make an event of it and have some fun. You only get to do this once, after all.
- Don’t forget the extras
Of course, you aren’t finished once you’ve picked the suit! Then you’ll need to find a shirt (plain or patterned?), pick a pair of shoes and consider any fun or sentimental extras such as heirloom cufflinks, a special tie or a pocket square. On the day, or better yet the day before, make sure you factor in enough time to properly prepare your outfit. Shoes should be polished, your shirt and suit should be spotless and freshly ironed and any fiddly extras (boutonnieres, for example) should be handled.
- Rules are made to be broken
Don’t forget to have some fun – as the saying goes, rules are made to be broken! From big style statements like a bold coloured suit to subtle nobs like a pair of bright socks, don’t be afraid to embrace your true style.
